Climber Profile
Mayan
Smith-Gobat
ClimbingAction has been watching the rise
in the climbing career of an understated
but exceptionally strong and continually
progressing climber; Mayan Smith-
Gobat. For the last seven years Mayan
has been pushing herself and climbing
standards at her home crags in New
Zealand. She has essentially maxed
out her local standards by opening first
ascents up to 8b+ (5.14a) and traveled
extensively in Europe in order to hone the
edge of her abilities.
Mayan has
just
completed her first pilgrimage
to Yosemite Valley where she made an
ascent on El
Cap...

Indoor Climbing Gyms
USA
Love to climb
the most aesthetic routes and be there at
the boulders where the latest and greatest
new problems are happening? We
do too! In reality, only a few
of us have the luxury to live at the
crags. The rest of humanity gets
strong near home. It may be at a
home wall, or you can check our our growing
list of indoor rock climbing
facilities. There are
hundreds.

Chris
Sharma in a mini movie about climbing in
China (ultra video
quality)

Since we are just waaaaay too busy to climb,
the only solution is to watch people who
do... and at really cool places
too.
What's different here? Optimized players
with larger screens and, where possible,
tweaked for higher quality than on other
climbing video sites.
What's the Lineup? Sport climbing,
bouldering, big wall soloing insanity,
base jumping and more.

Bouldering
Gear Is success in bouldering
important to
you? If so, you know that chalk
bags and crash pads are not accessories,
they're
necessities.
Carabiners and
Quickdraws Don't check out
the massive selection of carabiners and
quickdraws for too long. You
wouldn't want to appear like a noob at the crag
with a rack full of shiny new 'biners, eh?
Find a full selection of Black
Diamond, DMM, Petzl, Metolius, Omega
Pacific, Wild country, the latest
innovations by Mammut, and more.
Protection
Equipment
You don't need to use this kind of gear to
climb routes... if you don't mind
free soloing. All the schwag is
here; wired nuts, cams, bolt
hangers and accessories.
Harnesses Lots
of great designs on
the market this year including the
C.A.M.P. Quartz CR3 that, according to
Climbing Magazine, is like "a Ferrari
around your legs and waist." We're
really into Arc'teryx and Petzl as
well.
Rock Shoes and
Slippers At one time the guy
who runs Climbing Action owned 32 pairs of
climbing
shoes. Had a little problem,
don'tcha think? You don't need 32
pair of them, but if yours aren't giving
you the altitude you expect,
you owe it to yourself to see
what's hot in the world of high
performance footwear.
Belay
Devices
'Back in the day' if you fell asleep
belaying
a multi hour aid pitch someone was
likely to bite the dust from many pitches
up. Now belay devices almost operate
like climbing cruise control. We
still love the Grigri above the rest.
Rope
Our guide to climbing ropes
is a must read before you decide on
a rope.
When it comes to the heaviest, and often,
most expensive piece of gear you'll own,
getting it right the first time is
essential. Or you can click on the
rope to see what's
available.
Big
Wall
For some, walls are heaven and to others,
they're straight outta hell. Either way,
if you're heading high you will
need the gear to pull it
off.
Training
supplies Campus rungs,
hangboards, holds, squeezie
things... you know the story.
Accessories
Helmets, stick clip, slacklines, and a
bunch of other thingys.
Gotta go
look.
